PETA’s decided to take the high road with Elle Macpherson over her rhino horn use (yes, that sounds dirty, and it is). PETA President Ingrid Newkirk kills the over-the-hill supemodel with kindness in this letter, and tries to change her mind by telling her how amazing rhinos are and that she’s a role model etc. Normally I’d think this is a sensible approach, but I think PETA underestimates just how vain people can be, and if Macpherson actually believes that rhino horn powder is the fountain of youth, well, you’ll probably have to pry it out of her cold, craggly hands.
I disagree that she’s a role model, though. I think we understimate people. The reason the public follows celebrity culture in the first place is to watch these people f*** up. Everyone, from news outlets to gossip blogs, are on her case about this. She’s already been tried in the court of public opinion and lost. I doubt anyone will run out and buy rhino horn now, they’ll just have one more celebrity to badmouth.
UPDATE: Elle says it was all a joke and that she “never knowingly consumed or encouraged the use or consumption of any products which contain material derived from endangered species.” Does this make sense to anyone? Didn’t think so.
